The Allure of the Aphorism: A Study of the Biblical Book of Proverbs

Utilizing Rabbi Dr. Shmuly Yanklowitz’s new (and very beautiful) commentary, we’ll embark on an 8 week study of Sefer Mishle – The Book of Proverbs, which is part of the Hebrew Bible’s collection of Wisdom Literature which also includes Kohelet/Ecclesiastes and Job. Proverbs offers maxims, aphorisms, and dialogues directed at students, children, and all of us. We’ll begin with some reflection on the aphorism as a kind of literature and a review of ancient wisdom literature, after which we will turn our attention to key sections of Proverbs itself. Let’s get wise(r) together!
